How to Become a Member of the Irish College of GPs

You become a member through our GP Training course or through studying with the Faculty of Military Medicine.

Applications for Membership via Equivalent Qualifications

The college only accepts applications for membership of the College from general practitioners who meet the specified criteria within one of the categories outlined below. If you have any questions around the application process, please Contact Us.

Please note that as part of the application process, you will be required to supply contact details for nominators who will be then contacted by the college as part of our verification process.

All applications must be completed via the online application form and we cannot accommodate paper applications.

Application Criteria

Click on the title below that matches your particular situation for what you need in order to apply for membership.

  • UK-trained practitioners must meet one of the following criteria:

    • Hold a JCGPT Certificate (without summative assessment) and evidence of five years' full-time or equivalent part-time experience, commencing on or before 1 January 1995
    • Hold a JCGPT Certificate with Summative Assessment (and/or MRCGP) and issued under Article 28 of Directive 2005/36/EC (formerly EU Directive 93/16)
    • Hold a PMETB (UK) Certificate with Summative Assessment (and/or MRCGP) and issued under Article 28 of Directive 2005/36/EC (formerly EU Directive 93/16)
    • Hold JCGPT Certificate with Summative Assessment (and/or MRCGP) but not covered by Article 28 of Directive 2005/36/EC (formerly EU Directive 93/16)
    • Hold a PMETB (UK) Certificate with Summative Assessment (and/or MRCGP) but not covered by Article 28 of Directive 2005/36/EC (formerly EU Directive 93/16)

    In order to complete your application you must be able to upload copies of the following documentation:

    • Copy of your JCGPT or PMETB Certificate
    • Copy of your MRCGP Certificate
    • Evidence of Summative Assessment (If applicable)
    • Evidence of Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council (General Practice)
    • Evidence of current Professional Indemnity (General Practice)
    • Professional Competence Statement of Participation
    • Evidence of six months' full-time General Practice experience in Ireland at point of application.(Posts will be independently verified)
    • OR
    • Evidence of a minimum of six months' full-time single-handed General Practice experience in Ireland at point of application. 
  • In order to complete your application you must be able to upload copies of the following documentation:

    • Evidence of Satisfactory completion of Specialist Training (Certificate)
    • Evidence of Membership of relevant Family Medicine body linked to training
    • Evidence of completion of summative assessment (Family Medicine Specialist Training)
    • Evidence of Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council (General Practice)
    • Professional Competence Statement of Participation
    • Evidence of current Professional Indemnity (General Practice)
    • Evidence of 12 months' full-time General Practice experience in Ireland at point of application. (Posts will be independently verified)
    • OR
    • Evidence of a minimum of 12 months' full-time single-handed General Practice experience in Ireland at point of application.
  • Please note: In order to apply under this category, you must have completed structured general practice training in Australia in addition to completion of the relevant summative assessments.

    In order to complete your application you must be able to upload copies of the following documentation:

    • Evidence of Satisfactory completion of Specialist Training (Australia)
    • Evidence of FRACGP
    • Evidence of completion of summative assessment (Family Medicine Specialist Training)
    • Evidence of Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council (General Practice)
    • Professional Competence Statement of Participation
    • Evidence of current Professional Indemnity (General Practice)
    • Evidence of six months' full-time General Practice experience in Ireland at point of application.(Posts will be independently verified) 
    • OR
    • Evidence of a minimum of six months' full-time single-handed General Practice experience in Ireland at point of application. 
  • Please note: Applicants in this category must provide confirmation from the Irish Medical Council that the Certificate they hold from the appropriate competent authority in the country of training, complies with Article 30/31 Title IV and Article 28 of Directive 2005/36/EC.

    In order to apply within this category you must be able to demonstrate completion of a recognised general practice training programme (minimum of 3 years) as confirmed by a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion from an accredited training programme/recognised training authority including an accredited summative/end point assessment in general practice

    Applicants in this category may be required to supply a copy of their GP Training curriculum in order to facilitate an equivalency assessment.

    • Evidence of satisfactory completion of Specialist Training (Certificate)
    • Evidence of Membership of relevant Family Medicine body linked to training
    • Evidence of completion of summative assessment (Family Medicine Specialist Training)
    • Evidence of Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council (General Practice)
    • Professional Competence Statement of Participation
    • Evidence of current Professional Indemnity (General Practice)

    Or

    • Evidence of 12 months' full-time General Practice experience in Ireland at point of application.(Posts will be independently verified)

Network of Establishing GPs

GPs who apply for Irish College of GPs membership through equivalent qualifications will be enabled to access the College's Network of Establishing GP (NEGs) programme, while awaiting the processing of their application. GPs who feel they currently meet the requirements for membership, or who will meet the criteria in the near future, should now make a formal application and submit to the college (without the application fee).
