About the Diploma in Musculoskeletal Injury Management

Musculoskeletal problems constitute a substantial ever-growing burden on society, on the medical services and all personnel dealing with these conditions. Bone and joint disorders account for more than half of all chronic conditions in people over 50 years and the most common cause of severe, long‐term pain and disability. In Ireland, the average GP practice consists of almost 20% musculoskeletal problems.

This course is designed for GPs to provide a sound understanding of musculoskeletal soft tissue dysfunction as it presents in the surgery. It also aims to further prepare the GP in recognising, assessing and managing these disorders.

The course is run jointly by the Irish College of GPs and the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine (FSEM) RCPI & RCSI

Course Duration

The course will commence on Friday 18 October 2023 and run until Saturday, 24 May 2025. Participants are required to attend four weekend workshops during the academic year and sit and pass the end of year examination at the fifth and final weekend workshop. Pre-reading and other eLearning content will be available online in advance of each workshop.

Course venue

The venue for this course will be The Ashling Hotel, 10 - 13 Parkgate St, Stoneybatter, Dublin 8, D08 P38N.

More information about this course

  • All GPs who wish to increase their learning in musculoskeletal problems; GPs in training who wish to augment their training in this area of interest.

    • A blend of pre-module reading and viewing of recorded content
    • Live interactive workshops
    • Practical hands-on examination skills/competence

    • Participants will receive electronic handouts summarising the key learning/practice points
    • The course will provide evidence-based knowledge on common conditions in musculoskeletal soft tissue dysfunction including areas such as elbow, shoulder, knee, lumbosacral spine, hand and wrist, thoracic spine, hip, ankle, cervical spine, thumb, and hip triangle
    • The doctor will receive evidence-based learning on best practice and signposting to relevant guidelines
    • The course is driven by "learning outcomes" and with a huge emphasis on practice skills which will meet these general practice needs in the future
