About Management in Practice

The Irish College of GPs Management in Practice course is a highly interactive, blended learning programme designed to provide the participant (general practitioners, practice managers and other staff) with management competencies that are relevant and applicable to their everyday practice.

The modular approach provides participants with an option to complete the entire course or to choose specific modules during the year.

Course duration

The course will commence in December 2024 and run one module per month until June 2025. Pre-reading and other elearning content will be available online on the 'module opens' dates. Participants are expected to attend the live webinar plus Q&A session per module, which will generally be held at 1pm on a  Tuesday, as per the course timetable.

How do I apply?

Participants will have the option to complete the entire course or to choose specific modules during the year.

Who is this course suitable for?
GPs, practice managers, GP trainees and other staff members who wish to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for the effective management of their practice.

How will it be taught?

  • A blend of pre-module reading and viewing of recorded content
  • Live interactive webinar including Q&A with subject experts
  • Discussion via a moderated discussion forum
  • Webinar recordings will be available to participants throughout the course year

What will I learn?
As part of this course participants will:

  • Be able to fully develop their management role
  • Have appraised their practice profitability and its relationship to the quality of service (and service provision) within the practice
  • Manage practice resources more effectively and efficiently
  • Ensure that their colleagues in the practice have a better understanding of the practice manager's role
  • Have increased their knowledge of management principles and techniques, of the practice, general practice and wider health care sector
  • Have identified solutions to problems commonly experienced in the management of a general practice
  • Have achieved improved specific skills, e.g. people management skills
  • Reappraise their own job role using what they have learnt on the course for professional and personal development
  • Implement significant change within the practice
