GP Trainee Recruitment: Eligibility Criteria

Applicants that meet the minimum criteria in the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) and the Clinical Problem-Solving Test (CPST) are required to provide evidence of meeting the Irish Medical Council (IMC) eligibility criteria for entry onto the Trainee Specialist Register and the HSE English language criteria at application stage. More information can be found in the documents below.

Entry Criteria

Applicants must also ensure they meet the requirements of the Irish College of GPs person specification as follows:

  • Entrants must be the holder of a primary medical degree or equivalent medical qualification.

  • Applicants must:

    • Be eligible for registration on the trainee specialist register of the Irish Medical Council register.  
    • Not be registered nor entitled to be registered as a specialist in General Practice on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Irish Medical Council.
    • Not hold nor be eligible to hold a Certificate of Specific Training/Acquired Rights in General Practice from the Irish Medical Council.
    • Not currently be a trainee in any of the recognised general practice training schemes in the Republic of Ireland. Applications from those previously on a GP Training scheme in the Republic of Ireland will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
    • Not currently be registered on the International Medical Graduate Rural GP Programme.
  • Applicants must:

    • Have completed a minimum of nine months paid full time (or equivalent) postgraduate acute hospital based clinical experience either as an intern or SHO at the time of starting GP Training.
    • Have undertaken and attained the required standard in the SJT and CPST tests.
    • Display, to the satisfaction of an interview board, a range of competencies appropriate to the role of a GP trainee.
  • Applicants must be fit to practice safely on the trainee register without restriction at the commencement of training date.

  • Applicants must be fully competent and capable of performing the duties associated with participation in a GP Training Scheme and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service in training posts.
